Barnes just misses cycle as Cutters beat Muckdogs

As the ball settled into the glove of Batavia second baseman Niko Vasquez in the bottom of the eighth inning, the only suspense left in the final six innings Tuesday’s series finale against Williamsport ended. Crosscutters shortstop Jeremy Barnes put his head down as he trotted back toward the first-base dugout, still a double short of hitting for the cycle. The Notre Dame product had been needing that double since the third inning of Williamsport’s 10-7 win at Bowman Field to complete the cycle. He had a single and a triple in the Cutters’ six-run third inning and a two-run home run in the first inning. But as Barnes stepped into the dugout to a good heckling from his teammates, he had to settle for a 3-for-5 night with four RBI. “I was looking for it. In all honesty,” Barnes said after popping up to the infield in each of his final two at-bats. “That’s probably why I didn’t get a hit in my last two at-bats.
