(EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is the ninth installment in a monthly series called “Making the Grade” that focuses on the Williamsport Area School District and what it is doing to make Adequate Yearly Progress as measured by the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The final installment will be published July 28.) Lycoming Valley Middle School students become members of the “Royal Court” governing body and merchants in the “Kingdom of the Valley” to role play and learn, first-hand, the meaning of “taxation without representation” and why it led to the American Revolution. They also discussed how marriages used to be arranged by the parents and how they would react to that if they were told who to marry so they can better understand why the characters Romeo and Juliet acted as they did in the classic Shakespeare tale. “It’s always about relating the curriculum to their lives, and it’s fun when they get that,” said Barbara Cioffi, eighth-grade language arts teacher.
