Quite a character

I was in awe as I watched all two hours and 40 minutes of "The Dark Knight" this past weekend. I laughed. I gripped the sides of my seat. I shook my head in disbelief. I sighed in relief. I cringed. I even got a few chills. I don't think I've ever seen a character quite as memorable as The Joker played by the late Heath Ledger -- and I'm not just saying that because he's no longer alive. He was completely demonic and downright evil -- yet, as a viewer, you couldn't wait to see him on the screen again. I wouldn't go as far as to say that he carried the movie, but "The Dark Knight" certainly wouldn't have been anywhere near as good if it weren't for The Joker. Most of the time it was the subtle characteristics and mannerisms Ledger portrayed that made the character; the licking of the lips, the range in his voice, the way he walked, and yes, even that chilling, cackling laugh -- it all screamed evil.

Baby is coming

I'm going to be a grandma! Yippee! Our oldest son, Aaron and his wife of five years, Sara, just announced they are expecting in February, 09. This is our first grandchild and we are so excited! By this time next year, our grandbaby will be six months old! Wow, I am still in shock. Our younger son, Micah, married the love of his life, Rachael, June 28 when we started our vacation and then we got this tremendous news on July 12 as we were ending it. God is so good! Now every time I go shopping, all I see is baby stuff! And I can't wait to find out if it is a boy or girl, so I can start buying! All other grandparents know how exciting this is. For the rest of you, just ignore me, I am smiling from ear to ear!

In Summary Chains and Consolidation. Eventually the large number of newspapers in this country succumbed to consolidation by larger chains of newspapers. In the first half of the twentieth century the number of newspapers began to decline and of those surviving, more and more were owned by large national newspaper chains rather than local citizens. Reducing the number of newspapers in a city or area had advantages for those that did survive - where there were once 20 daily newspapers in New York city, by 1940 there were only eight and in that year 25 cities in the US with a population of more than 100,000 had only one daily newspaper. E.W. Scripps created the first large newspaper chain in the U.S.

How can we trust politicians when their actions are so confusing? I speak of the political corruption scandal that is just beginning to unfold in Pennsylvania and the state House of Representatives. After a yearlong grand jury investigation that is still ongoing, 12 people connected to the state House's Democratic caucus were arrested and charged with using taxpayer dollars to fuel political activities. Future revelations from this grand jury could be quite interesting ... theoretically, this could be just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. And I say that from the vantage point of watching the email traffic jam that builds and climaxes every political season and election day. Candidates spin out e-mails proclaiming their positions, heralding their appearances and putting down their opponents.

Remaking Rocky Horror, horrible idea For all that is horror, why must we mess with good films? Riding on the back of this new trend in musically movies; MTV has decided to remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Not a good idea. That movie is just fine the way it is, raunchy, humorous and fun to sing along with. I can’t imagine they could find anyone better than Tim Curry and Meatloaf. Well at least it brings it to a new generation and the midnight fun can continue!!! Read more at blog links.

The problem of unreliable funding deferred

Pennsylvania set an all-time record in lottery ticket sales for the fiscal year ending June 30, with a total of $3.089 billion. Net revenues, at $928 million according to the Patriot News, remain close to what was collected the prior year. And politicians and taxpayers can breathe a sigh of relief as it appears the new slot parlors will divert business from the state's lotteries. Lottery revenues pay for programs for senior citizens, including property tax and rent rebates, free and reduced-fare public transit, and prescription drug discounts. Had lottery sales taken a hit, funds from other sources may have been needed to cover the gap — an ever-returning threat that occurs when government relies on taxes or fees from discretionary spending, whether it be lottery tickets or cigarette taxes. Coverage in the Patriot-News and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was colored with wonder the souring economy did not diminish sales.

The 72 Dolphins...Perfect, but hardly the best

Every year some of the classless 1972 Dolphins act like juveniles when the last undefeated team falls. They pop champagne and toast each other as their status as the only undefeated team in NFL history remains secure. We all saw the depths that these players, like lead whiner Mercury Morris, will sink to in order to protect their turf as they constantly cried and made excuses when the Patriots threatened to go 19-0 and push them aside, since 19-0 is greater than 17-0, which is what those Dolphins went. For the record, the Patriots were 18-0 at one point, something the Dolphins never reached. Those Dolphins like to say that since they went 17-0 that automatically means they are the greatest team in NFL history. They also like to act like those that don’t go undefeated are inferior. That is the hardly the case. Make no mistake, the Dolphins were great–but they also were the beneficiaries of one of the softest schedules a team could ever hope to have.

A long weekend

I am so looking forward to this long weekend. The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. Family gathers on all sides to celebrate our independence with food, laughter and, best of all, fireworks! On Thursday night, I plan to make a cake with my daughter for a Friday picnic and on Friday night, we'll whip up a pasta salad for a Saturday get-together. There's nothing better than picnic food, if you ask me. My father's slowly getting better and is able to eat foods without gagging, as well as staying up a little later. He made it over Friday night for a visit and my daughter was thrilled to be crawling all over her Pop again. B-2, on the other hand, is much too heavy for him. He's my 6-month-old Porky Pig that weighs a little too much for my father's bony arms. (He's working on getting some muscle back on his body, though!) We had a busy weekend with Avon deliveries, birthday parties and shopping on Saturday, and church, dinner and babysitting on Sunday.

Sausage with Rice and Broccoli Tools You'll Need: Large skillet with lid, stirring spoon, measuring cup. Ingredients: Four Italian Sausages (Sweet or Hot) One cup uncooked rice One (12oz) bag frozen broccolli (flowers and stems) Garlic salt 2 Tbs butter 2 1/3 cups water 0ne 8oz can mushrooms (optional) I had no idea what I wanted for dinner. I looked in the freezer and saw some sausage, so I yanked it out of there and thawed it in the microwave. Now the problem was: How am I going to prepare it? Well, there was no way I was leaving the house, so I had to use what was already in the cupboards.
