3 cheers for a possible ice rink
November 16, 2011 - Mike Maneval
Plans announced last week for private developers to bring an ice-skating rink appear to be promising, and Mayor Gabriel J. Campana, who has sought to attract an ice rink to the community since his days on city council, should be commended for the project nearing reality. Such a facility would provide families and youngsters a healthy activity, and would be an amenity to which economic development advocates can point when recruiting other employers to bring jobs to Lycoming County.
Best of all, while specific details about the rink still are forthcoming, early reports indicate no public money would need to be spent on sweetening the deal for the potential owners - itself a promising trend in a day and age when so many private facilities, from convention centers in Philadelphia to minor-league stadiums in Scranton, count on corporate welfare ... public assistance rarely acknowledged when myth-makers praise the "self-reliance" of the private sector.
