What's missing from Mona Charen's latest commentary?
October 26, 2011 - Mike Maneval
Columnist Mona Charen manages quite the feat this week: A column about illegal immigration and the Republican presidential primary field's jostling over the issue that fails to mention the incumbent president's record numbers of deportations.
When Charen refers to a decline in illegal immigration in a column the Sun-Gazette published Wednesday while mentioning the United States' sour economic climate, the activity of drug cartels, and even "improved opportunities" in Mexico as possible explanations, she couldn't be troubled to include the reality that the Obama administration deports more illegal immigrants in a week or month than the administrations of either George W. Bush or Bill Clinton. Or that the Obama administration has, as the Washington Post reported in July, 2010, prioritized deportation for violent criminals.
Since that 2010 report, the pace of deportations not only hasn't slackened, but increased - according to a report from Reuters wire service last month, if the pace of deportation continues on its present course, the Obama administration will have deported more illegal immigrants in four years than President George W. Bush did in eight.
