Steelers Super Bowl Fever
February 4, 2011 - Bernard A. Oravec
We are truly blessed in central and western Pennsylvania to have a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers to support. Since 1972, for the most part, The Steelers have been in the playoff hunt year in and year out. Very few fans can boast that their team is always a contender. I remember the excitement during the 1970's as the Steelers racked up four super Bowl victories. Their annual battles (1972-1976) with the Oakland Raiders to reach the big game are just as legendary. In those days our families would visit each other for the week to 10 days after Christmas. I can remember everyone enjoying the food and company, until the men and boys would peel off to the tv room or basement to watch the Steelers in the playoffs. Every year, the Steelers playoff run brings back those memories to me. This year is no different. I also enjoy the extreme devotion shown to the team as I drive westward to visit family. From Williamsport to Lock Haven to State College to Altoona to Johnstown...Steeler yard displays and flags are everywhere. I am especially thrilled with the fans of Steeler Nation in the Williamsport and Lycoming County area. I was actually a bit surprised of the following the team has in this area. I was always told that NorthCentral Pennsylvania is Eagles country. I guess there is enough support to go around. Hope to one day see a Steelers vs. Eagles Super Bowl. Wow, what a party that would be! Enjoy the game Sunday.
