Spring can't be far away, or can it?

February 2, 2011 - Cheryl Clarke
We bid goodbye to January, only to get walloped by February with a dangerous mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, the dreaded winter trifecta that can cause people to lose thier electrical power, fall down in the driveway, and slide all over the road if they have to go out in it. While our neighbors to the north where my sister and brother and their families live, in Syracuse, got more snow, we got a lot of the frozen rain instead, and, I much prefer the snow. At least you can get around in it. There is no getting around on ice. A couple good notes: today being "ground hog day" the fat rodent didn't see his shadow! I think that means Spring is right around the corner. Now we all know that the first day of spring in 6 weeks from today whether Phil sees his shadow or not, but could his not seeing his shadow mean that Spring weather is right around the corner, i.e. "early?" Or at least maybe the remainder of winter won't be so cold and well, wintry. Another new event we are celebrating February 3, tomorrow, is our first grandchild Julia's 2nd birthday. Can't believe she is a little girl already. Seems like she was just born the other day. Happy Birthday sweetheart! February also has Valentine's Day, which my husband (the killjoy) says was made up by the card companies to keep them in business through the long winter months till the next card giving occasion, presumabley Easter, gets here (which is late this year, not until April 24). It also is Black History Month, Healthy Heart Month, (in honor of Valentine's Day, I suppose) and I just found out "Pet Dental Care Month." Now I don't know about you, but I have never brushed my cat's teeth, and she is doing just fine, thank you very much. She is more like a hibernating bear now anyway, as she will be 12 in April, which is old for a cat I am told, and dreads winter more and more each year, sort of like me. But as we welcome February of 2011, we can hope the groundhog's prediction comes true, and we see spring weather come soon, if not in February, at least sometime in early March. Time will tell, as we zip through the short month of February and "march" into March. The next old saying to pay attention to is: If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb," or vice versa as the case may be.
