Moving out, again
June 17, 2008 - LLee Janssen
Took a week off from work as one son returned to his full-time job at the Guard unit and another left for Spain. Had a lovely vacation in sunny Williamsport, but now holidaying is over and it's back to reality. And right about the time I was getting used to life with life around, soldier boy announces he's moving out, again, in coming days.
But I'm okay with that. My son came home from the theater, something not every military mother can say. John McCain has it right in his commercial about nobody liking war, though the spot is not specific about whether he would like to see our troops brought home or what he would do to promote that end.
So before the young ones head off again, what better place to plan a getaway than the backyard? With friends and family around! Too often we overlook what's right under our own noses, and there's tons to do around here this time of year. The vaca kicked off nicely from the second View from the Porch, a fabulous event that this year coincided with First Friday, a monthly staple downtown. That weekend also brought the first-ever Tour de Bill community bike ride, Ways Garden art show and Billtown Blues Festival -- but how much can you jam into one weekend? Obviously, not everything ... but it's always more fun when options abound. Too bad for me, those options included mastering the art of the cupcake, rather than finally painting the ceiling.
So what if it was still on the list when Monday rolled around? All I can say is, thank goodness I get to go back to the office!
